-------Teacher Biographies-------

Virginia Robertson, holding a Master of Fine Arts Degree, taught art at three universities, before embarking on a career facilitating creativity through fabric and sewing.  Virginia has taught quilting and dollmaking throughout the US, Europe, New Zealand, and Austrailia.  She teaches at the International Quilt Festival in Houston every year, and was named Dollmaker of the Year in 1997.

Virginia has designed over 4000 different fabrics for three international fabric companies over the years.  With her husband, Lynn, she has devoted 29 years to
publishing her books and patterns, and has established three quilt shops in three unique locations:  Osage County, Kansas, in a 110 year old church,  a building at the base of Teluride Mountain, and a log cabin in Delores, Colorado.  Virginia believes
that creativity is the breaking of rules to create new solutions.  She teaches options for individual interpretation rather than strict rules.  Virginia’s magnificent samples of her work inspire students and encourage learning at Virginia’s deft hand.  Please see the article about Virginia in this newsletter telling about her classes offered in area quilt shops after the University Days.  Her website is www.virginiarobertson designs.com.

Gail Bird,  has devoted thirty-five years to the art of IGOLOCHKOY.  This word, meaning “with  a little needle” is the term the Ukranian Old Believers call needlepunch embroidery.  Ukranian icons, ceremonial robes, and ethnic costumes are embellished with bright floral designs worked in the stunning texture of punchneedle embroidery. This breathtakingly beautiful needlecraft has been applied to wearables, dolls, doll houses, jewelry, and functional and decorative home accessories, to name a few options.  Gail wrote the first book about needlepunch embroidery for Dover Publications in 1977 and continues to contribute to other magazines and books.  While teaching and lecturing internationally, Gail shares  her  very large and diversified collection, much of which will be in her exhibit at our museum.  Her husband , Richard, is in charge of the production of the tools which Gail uses and offers for sale.  She travels nationwide to sell her products at needle arts shows; her website is www.gailbird.com.
Her love for this fast and simple technique is contagious.  Her classes inspire creativity and the discovery of a “loopy” world of texture and color.  Don’t miss this “zany” and colorful personality coming to the museum and area quilt shops the week of June 8th  & 9th.
