Liz Alpert Fay: Ordinary/Extraordinary Women

Ordinary/Extraordinary Women represents the culmination of more than a decade of dedicated work by rug hooker Liz Alpert Fay, created to honor the women who have significantly influenced her life and artistic practice. The collection features seventeen life-size and larger hooked portraits depicting Alpert Fay’s daughter, friends, and other key influences.
Rebound, Renew, Reimagine: Quilts from the Manhattan Quilters Guild

The Manhattan Quilters Guild presents new works that commemorate the transition to post-pandemic life. This project was initiated to highlight the resurgence of personal interactions and the renewal of activities previously restricted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each participating artist produced a quilt for the exhibition, with each piece defined by a title beginning with the prefix “re.”
Traces: American Quilts from the Carol Butzke Collection
November 19, 2026–March 7, 2027
This exhibition draws on the personal collection of noted appraiser, historian, and quiltmaker Carol Butzke. Nearly forty pieces trace regional traditions from Pennsylvania Dutch and Mennonite makers to the antebellum South, with pattern histories, dye chemistry, and maker biographies researched firsthand by Butzke herself. A 40-plus-year veteran of the field, she is a certified appraiser and accredited judge, a WMQFA board member, and the scholar who led Mary McElwain's induction into the Quilters Hall of Fame. Each quilt on view carries her research into its fabric, dating, and origin story.
Yoko Sekita, Busy Day for a Wedding
Kawaii Appliqué Quilts from Japan
March 11–June 20, 2027
Six master quilters from Japan who specialize in applique quilts made with tiny pieces, typically tens of thousands of carefully manipulated bits of fabric in one quilt, are an integral part of Japan’s quilting community. The quilts made by Yoko Sekita Aki Sakai, Reiko Kato, Akiko Yoshimizu, Megumi Mizuno, and Hiroko Akita showcase Japan’s rich cultural heritage and draw upon the country’s long history with, and love for, Kawaii (cute tiny) objects. Many of these works have never been seen outside of Japan.

This solo exhibition features the world-renowned fiber artist Holly Wong. She will present a brand-new installation in the museum’s main gallery, inspired by her research into the Greek goddess Penelope. The exhibition explores themes such as making as a form of devotion and strategy, women’s work as a source of patience, agency, and power, and the steady, faithful labor that is central to quilting.
Julian Jamaal Jones, Black Frequency
Julian Jamaal Jones: A Seat at the Altar
September 24, 2027–January 23, 2028
A major solo exhibition and scholarly catalog featuring thirty new quilts and textile works by acclaimed Indiana-based artist Julian Jamaal Jones. Building on Jones’s exploration of spirituality, abstraction, and Black identity, this project marks a significant evolution in his conceptual and material practice.
